Te Kuiti's legendary All Black brothers Stan and Sir Colin Meads will go head to head in a rare grassroots rugby clash a week after the Stan Meads Cup finals day.
Over the years the Meads brothers played together for the Waitete club, King Country and the All Blacks however on Sunday September 22 the two brothers will square off on opposite sides when the Stan Meads Cup XV meet the Sir Colin Meads Invitation team at Te Kuiti.
The game gives talented SMC players an opportunity to showcase their skills on another stage. The SMC XV team will be coached by former All Black and King Country prop Phil Coffin, with the team announced after the SMC Cup finals day at Te Awamutu next Sunday.
A number of former well known players are eager to play in the encounter, where the Colin Meads Invitation team will be coached by former King Country coach Noel McQuilkin. Former All Blacks Dion Muir and Keith Robinson, New Zealand Maori and Steamers captain Wayne Ormond along with Damian Karauna (Bay of Plenty) and Keith Lowen (Waikato), are some well known former players to put their name forward for selection.
"Just the fact that it's Stan Meads versus Colin Meads, interest around the game is already starting to build," said SMC chairman Neil Macrae.
