In motorcross, Seb Still attended the North Island secondary schools champs in New Plymouth on Sunday as the only rider to represent Tauranga Boys' College. Seb rode like a demon to 2/2/3 in his three races, which placed him second overall in the 125cc class.
In clay target shooting, it was the first time in 2012 that Tauranga Boys College was represented by three squads at the Taupo shooting event. There were 32 squads in total with Tauranga Boys College A achieving second, a great result. Individual results were Brodie Clark (first boys) and Glen Lynn (4th boys) out of 160 shooters. The A team then continued from Taupo onto Palmerston North to compete at the Super 8 competition on Thursday.
Tauranga Boys College A won the Super 8 competition for the sixth year in a row. This result shows the dedication and commitment not only of the shooters but also their coaches and managers over the years. Tauranga Boys College have been very fortunate to have coaches of a high calibre.
In rugby, the Tauranga Boys' College second XV arrived in sunny Opotiki for a top of the table clash. Tauranga BC were aware of the dangers of a backlash after the Opotiki side had been beaten by 80 points by our first XV and so were set for it. Unfortunately, the lads weren't quite as prepared as the coaches hoped for when the players decided they didn't need to make the first-up tackles. There were some strong displays from Ben Noakes, Haydn Reardon and Sam Mannix, with Tiwara Kuka awarded the Jarred Hoeata shirt for his never-give-up attitude and strong defence.
In basketball, Tauranga Boys Nuggets took on Bethlehem senior C. The game started at a fast pace as Bethlehem College scored fastbreak points after a barrage of steals early on in the game. The quickness of Bethlehem players caused a lot of trouble for the Nuggets' offence and by half-time, Nuggets found themselves down by a large margin, eventually losing 50-20.
Tauranga Boys' College first XI football felt they had a good chance of taking the three points against Otumoetai, who were in a similar position on the league table. Locked together at 0-0 at the break, a cheap goal allowed Otumoetai to go up. Nathan Fry came off the bench to add some spark to the team, with German import Dante Ludwig finishing off a freekick for a 1-1, overall disappointing but also first away points for us.
In Tauranga Boys' College second XI against Aquinas College's first XI, we grabbed a handy lead by half-time and won 10-1. Goals to Dylan Bull (5), Henry Conway, Devyn Grantham, Taylor Hough, Michael Clarke and Connor Probert. A few unfortunate injuries dulled the day with goalkeeper Ben Mountain going into a heavy collision and suffering what looked to be a broken nose, as did Scott Crosdale with a suspected broken, or sprained, wrist.
Bethlehem College
The Bethlehem College Open A netball team won in a hard game against Otumoetai Premier One, 33-29. A similar result came from the Open B netball who are doing well in division two after beating Otumoetai Premier Two 29-24. Junior B netball also won 26-22 against Otumoetai Junior two.
This past weekend, the first XV rugby boys won 27-7 against Katikati. The second XV had a full turn out with a solid 24 players and four coaches and even managed to score a try.
Our first XI football boys went down in a close game to Otumoetai College first XI 2-1 while the girls' first XI football convincingly defeated Tauranga Girls senior gold 10-0.
Recently, Bethlehem College had two teams participating in the round the Mount relay. Both teams achieved great results with the senior girls' team of McKenzie Ball, Bethany Glenn, Jodi Furmage and Sally Haywood finishing fourth. Our intermediate girls' team of Kelly Furmage, Mikaela Basson, Toni Silcock and Freyja Fuller ran well and finished in first place.
Last weekend, Aneka Jones was part of a mixed team who participated in the regional mountain bike race 'Cateye Moonride' and her team succeeded in getting third place.
Congratulations to those students who have already gained representative selection. In hockey, Tiaan John and Luke Fisher have made the Tauranga under-18 boys team and in netball, Kelsey Randrup made the under-19 Bay of Plenty team, Paula Muller the under-17 premier team and Anna Foster and Emily Johnston the Bay of Plenty under-17 gold team.
Badminton has grown at the college over the last few years and recently both the boys and girls teams took part very successfully in the Tauranga section of the Bay schools competition. The boys A team won all their games in division one to qualify as the top-ranked winners. The team consisted of No 1 pair Ben Robinson and Michael Lewis, No 2 pair Josh Pepper and Tristan Downs-Hetet and at No 3, Paul Vanapan, who won all his games, including a vital win against Tauranga College's A team which led to an excellent 5-1 victory for the team.
The boys' B team (Josh Robinson, Thomas Stemmer, Scott Young and Shaun Minkhorst) in the second division were undefeated. The C team of Garrick Du Toit, Philip Cho, Jayden Collecutt, Hamish Duncanson and Leon Lim came runners-up, division two.
Our girls' A team were runners-up to Tauranga Girls College A in division one but still qualify for the finals. The team - Clare Murray Yuri Hayashi, Phoebe Cho and Minji Kim - had good wins against Te Puke and Katikati College. The girls B also qualified as runners-up to Tauranga Girls College after the tie was level 3-3. The team was Megan Nicholson, Sunny Baik, Suki Lau, Mickey Wong and Nicole Zhang . The regionals finals will be held at the QEYC at the end of June.
The school basketball teams had some close games this week with victories being earned by the junior boys' A and BC Bombay Brawlers.
Finally, the school sports council are raising money tonight for World Vision by playing 20 hours of sport throughout the night at school and inviting different schools, sports teams and businesses to play them in any sport at different times during the afternoon, evening and night. The sports will vary widely and include basketball, netball, touch, dodge ball, ultimate frisbee and chess. - Kelsey Randrup (sports captain).
Mt Maunganui College
Mount College netball teams had a fantastic weekend of wins. Friday night saw junior A take on BC junior A and come out victorious with a 37-26 win. Rimu had a win over Tauranga Girls ESP 22-19, Tawa took out Tauranga Girls' Gold Diggers 31-20 and Rata beat the All Stars 20-19.
Friday night wins were capped off with Tuis beating the Tauranga Girls' senior reserves with a massive 51-9 score and MMC1 taking a win over Tauranga Girls' league 2 36-21. Fantastic effort by all our senior teams.
Saturday brought the sun and for Mount Maunganui College, more wins with 9 Karaka beating Tauranga Girls' 9B 21-13 and 9 Kakariki taking a win over Tauranga Girls' Social Misfits 21-9. The Year 10 round began and the wins kept coming, with 10 Kiwi taking a solid win over Tauranga 10 Socialites 34-8 and 10 Kauri also taking out Te Whare Kura Kotuku 27-25.
Mount College had junior players attend Bay of Plenty representative trials. Successful trialists were: Under-15 premier: Emma Marumaru-Flynn, Georgia Reardon-Nikara, Bay of Plenty Gold: Emerson Todd, Bay of Plenty Blue: Caitlyn Lyttle, Eva Gibson, Raquel Leopold.
Congratulations to Sophie Millar who has been selected in the Bay of Plenty under-18 hockey team and will be playing several provincial matches leading up to nationals premier tournament in Dunedin in July.
Both girls' football teams had wins on Saturday, with Ella Golding scoring five of the 10 goals against Te Puke's first XI in a good team game and international student Lisa Octmuller scoring a hat-trick for the second XI in their match against Te Puke second XI, winning 4-0. Our boys' first XI had a 5 -5 draw against Katikati College.
Tauranga Girls' College
We've been carrying on with their successes this week in Tauranga Girls' College sport.
Congratulations to Megan Burrows and Courtney Coughlan, who were selected in the New Zealand underwater hockey under-23 omen's team. Congratulations also to Kelly Saunders who has been selected in the New Zealand under-18 team.
The countdown has begun for our senior volleyball team who are soon to depart for France to represent New Zealand at the World Schools' championships in Toulon.
The first XI football had a convincing win against Aquinas College 10-1 and the second XI had a good game against Katikati first XI, coming out on top 3-2. The third XI had a close game against Otumoetai 2nd XI, drawing 1-1. Junior A also had a draw 2-2 against Bethlehem College second XI.
The netball girls did well too, with League 1 beating Katikati Senior A 37-16, and League 3 winning 31-18 against Katikati senior B. The junior A beat Otumoetai junior 1 45-34, 10A won against Mount Maunganui College junior B 26-24, and 9A came out on top of Katikati Development 1 with a score of 23-18.
Last week in hockey, several teams were successful, with the first XI having a close tussle against Bethlehem College first XI, drawing 2-2. The Tauranga Girls' seniors won 7-1 against Mount College second XI, and the Juniors' beat Aquinas College second XI 1-0.
The Tauranga Girls' senior A basketball team was also victorious last week, downing Bethlehem College senior A 55-39. - Bria Wollaston.
Katikati College
Football: Katikati College girls' first XI travelled to Tauranga Girls' College to play their second XI on Saturday. After losing the toss, the girls kicked off and got straight to work with an early goal from Emma Roberts. Katikati held possession for most of the first half to lead 1-0 at the break. However, Katikati appeared to fall asleep and lost possession throughout the second half, giving away three goals. Roberts fought back to score her second goal in the last 20 minutes for a 3-2 loss.
Players of the day were keeper Lauren Morton Hay and right-back Tara Body.
The boys' first XI travelled to Whakatane last weekend to play Trident. The game started off very fast, with a quick goal from Trident in the first 10 minutes. Katikati were fast to hit back with Kieran Smorfitt playing one-on-one with the keeper and slotting the ball skilfully in to the bottom corner. Trident managed to pull back one more goal to make the half-time score 2-1. The next half was evenly matched with Trident ahead 3-1, with a free kick from Dean Roberts giving Keiran a second goal from off his head. Final score, 3-2 to Trident.
Netball: Our development 1 team played Tauranga Girls College B, with a great start from Katikati. Unfortunately, we couldn't keep the momentum with the final score 27-18 to Tauranga Girls. Player of the day was Georgia McLean.
Congratulations to Heidi Parkin, Zoe D'ath and Grace Diggelmann who have made Bay of Plenty netball representative teams for 2012. Heidi made the under-17 premier Bay team travelling to the nationals in Christchurch, as well as a warm-up tournament in Hamilton. Zoe and Grace are in the under-17 and under-15 Blue Bay teams involved in Hamilton and Auckland tournaments.
Rugby: The under-15 team had a home game against Otumoetai College at the weekend. Joe Braybrook had a great game, with Katikati winning game 24-3.
Otumoetai College
Our Premier One netball team had a strong game against defending champions Bethlehem College. Competitive throughout this physical encounter, it was only in the last quarter that we let slip a few unforced errors which contributed to a 29-32 loss. Defensively, Natalie Martin and Abi May had outstanding games showing their superior fitness.
The first XI boys found themselves playing Bethlehem College in round four of the Baywide Premier League. Looking for their first win, the team came out firing and turned early possession to the opening goal scored by Sebastian Giesler. Bethlehem replied quickly with a goal of their own going into halftime at 1-1. Soon after halftime, Vaughan Wilson scored a goal securing the win 2-1.
Our school's crosscountry was held in perfect conditions last week . With 715 runners throughout the event, it was quite a spectacle. The following athletes were our champions: Senior boys 6km: Lucas Fairweather, senior girls 4km: Katie Wilson, intermediate boys 4km: Isaiah Duncanson, intermediate girls 3km: Jessica Gadsbey, Year 10 boys: Jordy Ruegg, junior girls: Lea Deschamps, junior boys: Eben Macklow.
In sunny conditions, Otumoetai first XV ground out a good win against a determined Rotorua Boys second XV in Rotorua. The team battled into the wind in the first half and struggled to break the opposition defence. David Irwin kicked a penalty to give Otumoetai College a narrow half-time lead of three points.
The team knew to make good use of the wind in the second half and pressure from the kick and chase was eventually rewarded when Neal Redward showed good strength to break the line and score the only try of the match for an 8-0 win.
The second XV had a great win over Taupo-nui-a Tia 29-15. The boys had a dominant scrum and worked well to score their tries. Mana Puhipuhi had a good game on the wing, scoring a try. Jordan Jensen played well and carried the ball confidently at the Taupo defence from second-five.
Jessica Lacy has been selected into the Mount Maunganui surf lifesaving team to compete in the women's open relay at the world interclub champs in Adelaide later in the year. As a 16-year-old, this is an outstanding achievement.
Andre Sperling continues to perform well, placing first in the Bay of Plenty champs held on the Tarawera River in the under-18 K1 canoe slalom. Andre was also a member of the Tauranga six-man team that won the youth whitewater rafting race at the same event.
Te Puke High School
Basketball: Our senior boys had a good win against Bethlehem College last Wednesday. It wasn't an easy game but the boys' training is paying off. They will next face Matamata, who they have lost only one game against this season.
Rugby: Our boys 1st XV just keeps getting better! They played against Tauranga Boys' under-16s on the weekend and blitzed them 39-3. The boys have a midweek game this week against Bethlehem, which will be a tough game. Our under-15s had a bye. Our girls' rugby team had a tough game last weekend against Trident High School. They played hard but missed out on the win.
Football: Our first XI boys are back and better than before, securing an 8-1 victory against Otumoetai 2nd XI. The second XI boys played an away game against Katikati and proved that they don't have to be on their home turf to win. The final score was 4-1 to Te Puke. Our 3rd XI boys must have felt the pressure to perform as they too came away with a win against Papamoa College with the final score being 5-1.
The girls' first XI are still a bit rusty - they played Mount College last weekend and had a disappointing game. Our second XI girls were also playing Mount College but couldn't quite score a goal against them.
Hockey: Our boys' first XI played the Bethlehem College second XI and managed to score three goals in the first half. The final score was 4-2 to Te Puke.
Aquinas College
Aquinas College squash player James Cooper knows what the joy of sporting success tastes like.
The Year 13 student and deputy head boy has been selected for the under-19 national squash team to compete in the world championships in Qatar. James will shortly travel to Malaysia for a lead-up competition and will then travel to Qatar in the July holiday break.
James joins the ranks of a select number of Aquinas students who have achieved national selection while they are still at school. That list this year includes Anneke Grogan who recently represented NZ in Malta at the world crosscountry championships, and Alice McFall who will be attending the world triathlon championships later in the year in Auckland.
Still on the track, Aquinas College recently held its crossountry event and the top three results in age/gender groupings were:
