Bethlehem College
Cricket: In the 1st XI boys' game against Katikati, our top order performed well with Mitchell Fairweather scoring 31, Dylan Ramohitaj a maiden 56 and Bill Burnett notching up his second half century in consecutive weeks (50). Dylan Wadsworth and Daniel Price then pushed the total to a respectable 237. Katikati responded with an initial flourish, but their run rate slowed against our spinners, with Dylan Ramohitaj and Jack Preston both bowling well. Katikati faltered and we restricted them to 162 in their 45 overs. We retained our position at the top of the table and head to Whakatane to play in the regional finals of the Gillette Cup.
Surf Lifesaving: Emma Byrom did well in the Oceans 13 national surf sports. She got into all her finals in the run-swim-run and came 10th overall, with good performances in the tube rescue (fifth), diamond race (ninth), surf swim (12th) and in the grandcameron team event she was fourth for Omanu Club, competing against all surf lifesaving clubs.
Swimming: At the recent nationals, William Spear won bronze for 200m fly (he is now third in NZ) and also made several finals. Blake Horne won bronze in 50m back, 100m and 400m free, silver in 100m and 200m back, and gold in 200m free (achieving a new BOP record). He also achieved fifth in NZ for 200 IM, 6th for 1500 IM and 12th for 50 IM.
Waterpolo: BC Cudas won their game against Oropi Orcas 10-4, Ella Browne scoring five goals, Nick Wotton three and Jack Lock two. Unfortunately, a below strength BC Marlins Year 7 team struggled gallantly against Papamoa but lost 9-2.
Athletics: At the BOP Championships, the senior boys had outstanding results. We achieved a clean sweep in the jumping events with Cameron Gerlach winning the hurdles, Thomas Bernard the long jump, James Harwood the high jump, and Mathew Connolly won both the triple jump and the 400m in a record time.
Otumoetai College
Cricket: Our teams continue to do well with a comprehensive win by our firsts over the TBC 3rd XI. Vaughan Wilson had another great innings with 50 runs, well supported by Nathan MacDonald (23). Christian MacDonald was best bowler with 4/42. The 2nd XI played TBC Lords who made 161-6. A good team effort with lots of positive contributions secured the win with 162-6.
Equestrian: The team has taken out the BOP Secondary Schools Showjumping event for the third year running. Fourteen schools from around the Bay attended the event, held at Edgecumbe Pony Club. The team of six was made up of Paige Harris, Brooke Harris, Lea Deschamps, Alex Coughlan, Finn Maloney and Sophie Tingey. Every team member's round contributed to the points that were tallied for the overall win. The event comprised three jumping arenas with jumps of three different heights. Two riders compete in each arena. Sophie Tingey competed in the 1.5 metre arena and she won all three of her rounds which was a very impressive performance. Paige Harris, Alex Coughlan and Sophie Tingey have been members of the winning team for the last three years.
Swimming: Damien Potts, Joshua Pickett, Rhianna Maxwell, James Mercer, Samantha Carter and Georgia Hacker attended the New Zealand Age Group Swimming Champs in Wellington from February 26 to March 2. Damien secured a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly and top 10 finishes in the 100m and 50m fly, Joshua Pickett narrowly missed the bronze, placing fourth in the 100m breaststroke, and in the top 10 for 200m and 50m breaststroke. Other NZ top 10 placings went to Samantha in the 50m fly, 200m fly and 200m breast and Rhianna in the 800m free and 200m fly.
Rowing: Our rowers continue to prepare for their big Maadi Cup regatta coming up in Lake Karapiro.
Volleyball: Our eight teams competing in the Bay of Plenty competition had a busy weekend playing in eight different venues around the Bay. Well done to the teams who are all improving and looking forward to the Bay Champs this weekend at the ASB arena.
Otumoetai Intermediate
Cricket: Our first game was against Mount Intermediate with a win to Otumoetai Intermediate. We made 156/5 and bowled them out for 101. Congratulations to all our players especially Liam Hyland, James Beard, Ben Pomare, Xavier Gell and Max Delaney.
Triathlon: On Sunday, March 3, the Pahoia School triathlon was held at Omokoroa. Otumoetai Intermediate saw some great results with a first place for Jade Stafford, a second for Harry Low and third place for Josh Tisch (all Year 7 boys), first place for Grace Blissett and a second place for Tazmin March (Year 7 girls). Arleah Tippins came second in the Year 8 girls.
The Coronation Classic Triathlon took place at Pilot Bay on Sunday, March 3. Caitlin Hoskin won the super sprint distance, with Jamie Shields third.
Kayaking: Connor Brown entered a national kayaking competition at Blue Lake Rotorua and he came away with a bronze medal. His results were Tyro 1000m fourth, Tyro 500m third, Tyro 200m fifth.
Surf Lifesaving: Georgia Clements came sixth overall in the Beach flag event at the Ocean 13 nationals held last week at Mount Maunganui.
Tauranga Boys'
Cricket: Junior NZCT Championships. Our junior side played two games in the last four days and qualified for Nationals in 2013. Congratulations to them. On Friday, March 1, the team travelled to Whakatane to play Gisborne Boys' in the next round of the NZCT Qualifiers. After winning the toss, we put Gisborne into bat and Joe Turner (3-23) and Jamie Oakley (3-22) made the breakthroughs. Captain Tom Renouf took four catches. Ben Campbell (3-12) cleaned up the tail with a fine spell of bowling and Gisborne were all out for 121. The run chase began in trying conditions. Chris Wooller (43) joined Ben Campbell (53) at the crease and established themselves to build a fine unbeaten 100 run partnership to set up a nine wicket victory.
On Monday, March 4, TBC played their final qualifying game against Cambridge High at home. After losing the toss, we were put into bat on a damp pitch and made a solid 215. Chris Wooller (20) and Ben Campbell (43) had a 57 run partnership. Tom Renouf (30), Sean Wakelin (33) and Finn Russell (24) finished the innings strongly. Cambridge started their run chase slowly but maintained wickets. Joe Turner (3-23) took a hat-trick and Calem Taylor (4-12) bowled a superb spell of leg spin. A sharp run out by Chris Wooller, and wicket maiden on debut for Mikaere Leef, bowled Cambridge out for 77.
TBC vs Kelston Boys' High School exchange
Tennis: The TBC team performed well. They played 40 sets, winning 38 and only dropping two, to comfortably beat Kelston in overall match play. Year 9 student Jackson Curry and Year 11 Sam Miller took on the number one doubles team and won.
Bowls: It was a dominating performance by our young men, winning 20 of 20 games played.
Touch: Kelston's strength was evident as they won both games 8-5 and 5-2. George Honey was continually a threat with the ball in hand for TBC.
Cricket 2nd XI: TBC won both Twenty20 games convincingly. 180 v 55 and 236 v 73. Congratulations to Jarrad Tutty for his knock of 107.
Cricket 1st XI: TBC proved too strong in the first Twenty20 game, bowling Kelston out for 84 and scoring 85 for 4 with overs left. The second game saw TBC make 131 and Kelston cruised home with 132/5.
Athletics BOPSS - Junior athletes who won their events: Finn Crawford (100m), Ethan Holman (200m, Triple Jump) Bryn Fredheim (1500m, 3000m), Kyle Hamilton (shot put, discus), Josh De Koster (javelin). Intermediate winners: Johnny O'Donnell (100m), Daniel Hintz (1500m record) Khan Dobbs (high jump) and the 4x100m relay team. Senior winners: Olly Ranby (100m, 200m), Scott Crosdale (800m), Luke Bradshaw (1500m, 3000m), Ashton McQueen (shot Put), Hamish McGeorge (javelin) and the 4x100m team (record).
Tauranga Girls'
Kayaking: Haylee Dangen returned from Australia with an outstanding fourth in the Australian Open Under-18 K1 Canoe Slalom competition.
Volleyball: Both our Senior A and B teams played on the weekend at the ASB Arena. The Senior B team lost all their games but still managed to take sets off the Mount, Trident High school and Otumoetai. These girls are doing extremely well to be in the top 5 in the Bay of Plenty. The A team beat Mount Maunganui A and Trident A on Friday in four sets. The girls then continued on Saturday, beating Otumoetai and our Senior B in three sets on Saturday. Overall these results put the Senior A in first seed and the Senior B in fifth going into this weekend's BOP Championships.
Tauranga Intermediate
Cricket: Well done to coach Mr Jeftha and the boys' 1st XI for their convincing first round win over Bethlehem College last week. An outstanding batting performance led by Marcel Collett (115no) set up a total 177/3 for the visitors to chase. Bethlehem made 97/9 in their 20 overs. A great start to the defence of our national title.
Swimming: Congratulations to all those students who competed in the school swimming sports this week with 130 students participating. The day was a success and students competed in high spirits representing their houses proudly. Highlight of the day was the 15 school records broken - congratulations to the record-breaking students: Benji Rowe eight new records Year 8 boys' 200 IM 2:41.92, 50m free 29.58, 50m back 35.75, 50m fly 33.24, 100m free 1:05.25, 100m back 1:16.81, 50m breast, 100m breast 1:28.28; Marijke Hattingh eight new records Year 7 girls' 200 IM 2:51.68, 50m free 30.70, 50m back 34.66, 50m fly 35.74, 100m free 1:08.34, 100m back 1:17.72, 50m breast, 100m 1:135.41; Felila Simanu new record Year 8 girls' 50m free 30.36.
