Cricket: The first round of regional qualifying for the Gillette Cup competition were held at Fergusson Park in a Twenty20 format. The first match against Mount College was a low-scoring game, with BC chasing 58 for victory. Dylan Ramohitaj was the outstanding bowler, taking 3/10 off his allocated 4 overs.
The afternoon game saw BC compete against Katikati College. They batted first and with tight bowling were restricted to 78/7 off their 20 overs. Jack Preston had fine figures of 3/7 off his 4 over spell. The chase was difficult but eventually BC won with three balls to spare. Jack Preston also performed with the bat, scoring an invaluable 28 not out. In the normal schools competition, BC batted first against TBC fourth Xl. An early wicket was followed by a solid stand between Jack Preston (31) and Bill Burnett (54). A modest 189 total was only reached through Tom Rutherford (37) marshalling the lower order.
The opening bowlers performed well and when the spin bowlers took over, the opponents struggled even more. Dylan Ramohitaj took a fantastic 5/19 off 9 overs. The innings ended in the 37th over for 118. BC heads into the next round as the only unbeaten team in the Baywide competition.
Golf: Jayden Collecutt (Otumoetai), Lucas Lowe (Fairview/Omokoroa), and Madison Gartner (Tauranga) were involved in the third round of The Top of the Harbour competition played recently at Omokoroa. Tauranga is still in first place, 51 points clear of their nearest rival.
Tennis: The BoP Tennis championships were held at Gordon Spratt Reserve at Papamoa. Michael Jones won his plate match and Jun Nam was runner up in the consolation final in the Division 1 boys singles competition. Anina Van der Walt came second in Division 2, winning all but two of her games.
Water polo: Our Year 7 and 8 teams did well last week at the BoP Polytechnic pool, with spirited wins over their opponents. Our Year 8 team won 5-1 with four goals scored by Jack Lock against Tahatai C, while our Year 7 team won by 8-0 against Tauranga Intermediate C, with Oscar Brady scoring most of the goals. Both teams are benefiting from good coaching and displayed good defence. They will only improve with more game time and practices.
Otumoetai College
Cricket: The first XI travelled to Rotorua for their Gillette Cup Twenty/20 games against Aquinas and John Paul. Against Aquinas we got off to a really good start batting first. Our top batsman were Vaughan Wilson, Nathan McDonald, Julian Bradley leaving Aquinas to chase an imposing 150. With constant pressure from our team, Aquinas reached 89 all out with a clear victory to Otumoetai.
This advanced them through to the second round game against John Paul. John Paul batted first posting a total of 118. After a shaky start in the top order, Vaughan Wilson played consistently with 44 runs to advance the total to within 15 to win. Yohann Irani took the challenge and secured the winning runs with an outstanding boundary on the last ball. This was followed up with our Saturday game against Trident in Whakatane.
Wilson top scored again with 67, Nathan McDonald 55 and Tim Klyen 30. Scott Wilson did well taking 3/21, Jim Van der Vorm 2/19 and Louis Morris 2/32. Otumoetai scored 215 runs with Trident all out for 160 securing another good win. Our 3rd XI played Tauranga Boys Sabina and won by 71 runs. Otumoetai were put in to bat and made 162 for 5. Jack Gordon scored a well paced 52 before retiring. Tauranga Sabina then batted and were 50/8 before their last two partnerships got them through to 91 all out. In the bowling Jack Gordon took 3/6, James Beard 2/8 and Stefan Browne 2/14.
Equestrian: It was a threepeat for our team of Alex Coughlan, Lia Deschamps, Brooke Harris, Paige Harris, Finn Maloney and Sophie Tingey at the BOP Show Jumping Champs in Edgecumbe last week. Taking the title again for the third year in a row is a wonderful achievement for this group of dedicated riders.
Rowing: Our rowers had another successful weekend at the Mighty Rover Power Junior Regatta 3 with all rowers making at least one final. Results: Girls Under-15 coxed quad sculls Jackie van der Velden/Olivia Admundsen/Zoe Stevenson/Lauren Dance/Courtney Dyer (cox) 2nd in the B final; Girls Under-18 double sculls Kendall Hofland/Rosie van der Velden 2nd in the B final; Jamie Lynds 2nd in the Girls Under-16 Single; Suray Thomas 8th in the B final; Boys Under-18 double sculls novice, Dylan Ngatai/Steen Hemmingsen 5th in the A final; Kendall Hofland 6th in the B final; Girls Under-U16 coxed quad sculls Jamie Lynds/Suraya Thonas/Lizzie Coughlan/Hannah Ouelett 2nd B final; Boys Under-16 double sculls Dylan Ngatai/Nick Pilbrow and Rosie van der Velden in the Girls Under-18 single sculls made the final; Girls U15 double sculls Jackie van der Velden/Zoe Stevenson 4th A final; Girls U16 double sculls Jamie Lynds/Hannah Ouelett 6th A final; Boys U16 single sculls Dylan Ngatai 4th B final; Nick Pilbrow 6th A final.
Congratulations to these rowers who are building towards Maadi Cup in Lake Karapiro in three weeks time.
Tennis: Our school team competed at the BOPSS event in Papamoa last week. Best result was Kate Allen who played her school peer Harriet Callard in the semifinal, winning through to the Div One Girls singles final. Kate played well and secured the silver medal in this division.
Kayaking: Sam Roy will make his international debut this weekend with the New Zealand junior kayaking team in Sydney, competing in a round of the Australian canoe sprint series. It caps a great transition from a successful surf lifesaving background. This will be his first international event and first time in a New Zealand team. Sam won silver in the New Zealand under-18 K1 500m race in Rotorua recently. He then combined with Papamoa's Taris Harker to finish second in both the K2 500m and 1000m races and he won the K2 200m with Gisborne's Jarrod Fitzgerald. Both Harker and Fitzgerald will be teammates in the eight-strong squad this weekend. Sam will return from Australia and will immediately go into the Surf Lifesaving nationals. Congratulations to this elite athlete.
Otumoetai Intermediate
Swimming: Last week we had students compete at the New Zealand Junior championships competition held at Westwave Aquatic Centre in Auckland. Caelan Potts came away from the competition winning gold, silver and bronze. Our relay team was placed third in the North Island and was in the top ten in the whole of New Zealand. Well done to all our swimmers Connie-Pearl Anderson, Kate Bradley, Georgia Clement, Thomas Chaney, Taituha Woller, Harry Low, Caelan Potts, Grace Blissett, Georgia Rattray and Thomas Hacker.
Waterpolo: It has been a great start with two teams entered.
Volleyball: An incredible 127 players making a total of 16 teams entered the Elite, SuperVolley and Kiwi teams.
Softball: Has also had a good start with 26 players taking up the opportunity of having after school coaching lessons with Craig Hislop.
Cricket: We start this week with the interschool cricket with our first game against Mount Intermediate at Blake Park.
Tauranga Boys'
Athletics: It was a great day at the domain for the annual TBC athletics day. Ollie Ranby, Caleb Aperahama and Daniel Hintz all set new TBC records. Ollie broke the 200m senior boys record which has stood since 1973 with a scorching time of 22.04 seconds. The flyer from Freyberg also won the senior 100m and 400m events. Aperahama set a new senior shot put record with a throw of 14.53m smashing the old record of 13.58m. Daniel Hintz was in fine form with a fast 800m time of 2.01 breaking the previous record of 2.02. Ollie Ranby and Burton McAdam were joint senior athletics champions for 2013. Ranby winning the 100m, 200m and 400m while Burton won the long jump, triple jump and high jump events.
Luke Bradshaw, a promising middle distance runner, was placed third overall in the senior grade. Daniel Hintz took out intermediate athletics champ with Johnny O'Donnell and Steven Masters placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The junior grade was dominated by Kyle Hamilton, a promising year nine student. Kyle won the 200m, 300m, discus, shot put, triple jump and was placed 2nd in the long jump. Bryn Fredheim was placed second overall and dominated the middle distance events with Ethan Holman third in the junior grade.
Cricket: TBC 1st XI vs St Kentigern College. TBC 1st XI 168 (B Musgrave, G Kite 24, G Wallace 20) St Kentigern 167 for 7 (J Boyd 2/20, G Wallace 2/26). The first match of the two-day exchange brought a grandstand finish at Saint
Kentigern College. The beautiful scenery was matched by the sweetness of victory, culminating in our team huddling over the electronic scoreboard to commit the result to memory. After winning the toss and batting, TBC batted well throughout the innings and reached a very competitive 167 on a turning wicket. Ben Musgrave continued his good form and Grayson Kite illustrated his power hitting towards the end. With four spin bowlers in our side, we were always confident of defending the total.
However, frequent wides kept them in the hunt. In this 45 overs match, they required 20 off the last two overs and managed to get 10 in the first due to a massive six over cow corner.
That left Keaton Taylor to finish the job for us and he had it under control with seven required off the last two balls, until a boundary was hit through backward point.
After much conjecture over field placings for the final delivery, Keaton squeezed it between bat and pad and past leg stump through to the keeper.
They ran a bye, but Ben Musgrave wisely elected not to throw at the stumps and take the one run victory.
TBC 1st XI vs St Kentigern College, Twenty20, TBC 1st XI 130/1 (Ben Musgrave 66 not out, Keaton Taylor 57) beat St Kentigern 129 for 9 (J Oakley 5/19). With three wins in three matches over the extended cricket weekend, we take high confidence into the Kelston exchange this week.
Tennis: The Junior and Intermediate champs were held on Thursday 21 February. The Intermediate champion is Brad Curry who beat Reuben White in the final 6-3, 6-4 and the Junior champion is Jackson Curry, who beat Robin Yang in the final 6-1, 6-1.
Tauranga Girls'
Triathlon: The Waikato BOP Schools Triathlon Teams Championships were held on Thursday 21st February at Lake Karapiro and three of our girls achieved some amazing results.
In the Under-14 category, Kaylee Mudgway, Islah Kerr-Aim and Amelia Fleming beat out St Peter's Cambridge and Hamilton Girls' High School to claim the top spot and win gold.
Islah started the trio off with a 375m swim, then came Amelia with a 12km bike and finally Kaylee finished off with a 3.2km run.
Tennis: In the BOP Tennis Championships for 2013, Ashleigh Ross and Simone Te Kani take gold in the Division 1 Girls Doubles. Bria Merritt and Makayla Lawrence won bronze in the Division 2 Girls doubles.
Basketball: Makayla Daysh recently competed over in Australia as part of the New Zealand Under 20 Women's basketball team at the Australian Under 20s State Championships. Initially Daysh went into training camp in Auckland on Monday the 11th of February for two days before the team flew to Launceston, Tasmania. The team remained in training camp until the 16th, when they had their first game against Victoria. Daysh was the top scorer in that game and was also top scorer in games against South Australia, ACT and Tasmania. She had a great double against ACT with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Over the whole tournament she managed a total of 59 points, 20 rebounds and 8 blocks. Victoria ended up winning the championship.
Tauranga Intermediate
Surf lifesaving: Congratulations to all of our students who competed for their individual clubs at the Oceans 13. There were some outstanding results from our students in what is an extremely tough competition. Many of our students made semifinals and finals over the four day competition. Outstanding results: Liam Moffatt Gold U12 Board Relay, Silver U12 Tube Rescue, Silver U12 Diamond Race (Run, Swim, Board), Silver U12 Surf Race; Hoani Lawrence finalist in run, swim, run and Diamond Race; Joy Zhang-Mitchell finalist Diamond, Board, Surf run, swim, run; Meila Eades 6th Sprint U12, 3rd Grand Cameron, 4th Board Relay; Benji Rowe U13 6th Run, swim, run 6th Surf race; Rachel Weston U12 8th Sprint; Sophia Lawrence Cameron.
Tauriko School
Student leadership: This continues to be a focus at Tauriko School with the opportunity for sports minded students to grow their leadership skills in this learning area. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes in the playground, students are actively involved in games and activities organised and led by the newly appointed student Dynamo leaders in the school. These Year 6-8 students are Jack Wookey, Campbell Read, Lachie Aitken, Paige Bowles, Sophie Finn, Madeline Mangos, Jacob van Oosterhout, Emma Kennedy, Lucy Jensen, Arohaina Worthen, Hannah Rose, Lewis Groos, Ellie Richardson, Jessica James and Paige Bowles. Year 7 and 8 students Charlotte Mackinnon and Brooke James will oversee the programme and support the sports leaders. Last week the 14 Dynamo leaders and two mentors attended a two hour Lead-it workshop run by Margaret Apiti from Sport BOP. The workshop gave the Dynamos an opportunity to learn some new games, find out ways to work with and lead a group of students, and was also a great chance for the students to think about how they might develop their own leadership skills.
Te Puke High
Cricket: The boys cricket team played the TBC Year 9 rep team on Saturday. Tauranga batted first and got 179/2. Best bowling figures were Hugh Hawkey 1-32 off 6 and batter of the day was Dylan Kelly with 36. With the bat we were all out for 96. A tough game but our boys played well. Our girls are playing in the NZCT Cup on Wednesday and will play different teams from around the Bay.
Volleyball: Our teams head away on Friday and Saturday this week to different venues around the Bay for Round 2 in the BOPSS competition. This will determine their pool placing's for finals next weekend.
Athletics: We had a brilliant day last Thursday for athletics with some great results. We will now be entering our top competitors in the BOPSS Athletic Champs which will be held on March 5th.
Waterpolo: Our mixed team is improving, and beat Mount Maunganui 11-4 on their weekend game.
Basketball and Hockey: We are looking to start training our winter sports teams. Basketball and hockey are having trouble finding coaches and we would love for our students to be able to play in these local leagues.
