Boats, balls, boards, beaches and bikes - they're all represented in the Bay of Plenty sports awards tonight.
With five world champions represented in the list of finalists, competition for the esteemed Supreme Award will be extremely tough.
Last year's overall winner Peter Burling is again a finalist in the sportsman of the year category, where he joins surf athletes Andrew Newton and Glenn Anderson and previous winner, cyclist Julian Dean.
UCI BMX world champion Sarah Walker (Kawerau) is a finalist in the sportswoman of the year category, alongside surf athlete Rebecca Lockwood, world-ranked amateur boxer Kelly Woolrich and athlete Jess Ruthe.
Rugby sevens coach Gordon Tietjens, who last year led his team to another world series, is up for coach of the year alongside hockey's Allan Galletly, surf lifesaving's John Bryant, Danny McQueen (squash) and NZRU referee coach Rod Hill.
Junior sportsperson contenders for 2007 include world champion under-19 rugby player Luke Braid and Taekwondo's Shane Black, who also laid claim to a world title this year, national champion golfer Danny Lee and beach sprinter Chelsea Maples.
The supreme winner this year will join some illustrious company.
All Black Greg Rowlands (1976), top skiier Simon Wi Rutene (1986), New Zealand crickets Geoff Howarth (1981) and Lance Cairns (1983) and marathon runner Jack Foster (1970) all have their names on the trophy.
More recent winners include Vanessa Quin (2004), Moss Burmester (2002) and Dean, who also won in 1999.
Tietjens is also a previous winner, picking up the award in 1998.
A huge influx of nominations gave the judging panel a difficult job in selecting the list of 63 deserving finalists. The awards evening will be held at Baypark Events Centre, with a full house of 400 people expected.
