Tauranga hosted the first day of the National Youth Jazz Competition yesterday, with the first time an all-female combo has entered in the 39-years the competition has been running.
Musical Director of Tauranga Girls' College band Sextet Pistols, Murray Mason, said he thought there were a lot more combos this year.
"I'm really, really enjoying it," he said.
Sextet Pistols bass player Lizzie Kulasingham, 17, said she did not realise it was the first time an all-female combo had entered this competition.
"It's pretty cool, we think we did well once we got into it," she said.
