It's tough making ends meet these days but for retiree Peter Turmer of Pyes Pa, it's even more tricky. The reader wrote in to the Bay of Plenty Times to express his discontent at missing out on supermarket specials because he only needs enough groceries for one person.

What do you think? Have your say by commenting below.

Not so golden

As a single pensioner I enjoy certain privileges, generally as a result of showing my Gold Card on the bus and in certain stores.

However, I feel at a total disadvantage when supermarket shopping.

Generally all specials are related to multiple buys - two for three or four for five when I only require one.

A head of broccoli will last me a couple of weeks so I pay full price or don't buy at all.

So there are few specials I will take advantage of.

I would suggest that supermarkets start to recognise the Gold Cards or stop the marketing ploy of multiple buys. After all, more than 25 per cent of the population of Tauranga is over 65.
