Todd Muller is believed to be on the cusp of gaining a ministerial position amid the scramble for top jobs sparked by Prime Minister John Key's resignation.
The Bay of Plenty MP is regarded as one of the "four amigo" power-players on National's backbenches - a man whom other MPs are reportedly looking to for guidance amid the leadership battle.
He, Mark Mitchell, Alfred Ngaro and Chris Bishop earned their "amigo" status when they were sent to Northland last year in an unsuccessful bid to stop Winston Peters from winning a by-election.

Mr Muller would not be drawn yesterday on the likelihood of obtaining a ministerial post, saying there were "a whole lot of talented people" around him.
