The slip came down in Saturday's heavy rain, blocking part of the popular base track.

The Mauao base track at Mount Maunganui remains mostly open this morning but the council plans to have the full loop walkable in time for the weekend.

The full base track was closed after a slip on the Matakana Island side on Saturday.

Most of the track reopened mid-week, but the area of the slip - near North West Rock - stayed closed while the debris was cleared.

A Tauranga City Council spokeswoman said work was on track to clear enough of the slip that the full loop could open for weekend walkers.
