Vintage cars wow passersby

Vintage cars rolled into Tauranga city centre this morning and parked up for the public to admire as an extra treat for Jazz Festival goers.

The beautiful cars attracted crowds of people, who took photos and got a glimpse of cars from an era gone by.

Tauranga collector and vintage-car enthusiast Murray Toms was there with his three vintage vehicles, a black 1914 Dodge Bros Tourer, a lemon yellow 1917 Dodge Bros Roadster and a black 1937 Plymouth Delux Coupe convertible.

Mr Toms and his wife Joy had traveled far and wide in their vintage vehicles.

He had bought the black Dodge Roadster in 2010 from eBay. The car is one of a dozen in the world, Mr Toms said.

Though it only goes 40mph (around 60kmh) he and his wife have had some "good runs", taking many vacations and going as far up as North Cape and down as far as Ashburton.

"We've had a lot of fun.

"I quite like doing things like this [vintage car parade and display] though, it gives me quite a buzz.

"Hopefully we can give other people some enjoyment, too," Mr Toms said.

Now the owner of three vintage cars, Mr Toms bought his first in the late 1970s, a 1955 Dodge that his family used as their everyday car.

"The kids grew up in it, we had a lot of fun."

Though he already has three under his belt, Mr Toms still has his eye on a 1940 Cadillac LaSalle.
