The sandpit near the Hairy Maclary and Friends sculpture on Tauranga's waterfront has been given a permanent upgrade, Tauranga City Council has announced.
The original sandpit was to be temporary but it was so popular the council has designed a permanent sand play area for the waterfront including, with help from corporate sponsorship, a new shade installation.
The revamped sandpit area will be officially opened on Saturday.
Local law firm and Project Tauranga partner Cooney Lees Morgan, which gifted the shade installation as part of their 100th anniversary, will host an opening celebration at the sandpit from 12.30pm.
There will be music and a gold coin sausage sizzle with all proceeds going to Homes of Hope.
