Two teenagers nearly drowned after they were caught in rips in separate incidents along the Western Bay coastline yesterday.
A 14-year-old boy was rescued after he was caught in a rip off Tay St, in Mount Maunganui, about 2.45pm.
About two hours later, emergency services were called to Omanu after a 19-year-old man got into trouble. He was swimming outside the Omanu Surf Club.
Nicole Spargo from Mount Maunganui St John Ambulance said in both instances the youths were caught in rips.
"The 14-year-old male was in trouble and he swallowed some water, and he was taken to hospital in a moderate but stable condition."
