A car flipped on its side after a two-car collision on Te Puna Rd yesterday, the occupants escaping with minor injuries.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said a vehicle was travelling on Te Puna Rd and the driver was intending to turn right into a driveway when another vehicle hit it from behind.

"That caused the first vehicle to overturn," Mr Campion said. "The driver from the overturned vehicle was taken to Tauranga Hospital for observation."

Mr Campion said there were no major injuries.

The road was down to one lane while emergency services attended the crash.

Police Northern Communications Centre Inspector Shawn Rutene said firefighters had to extricate a person from one of the cars.

"Two persons were injured, but they are both status four - which means they are walking and maybe have a few cuts and bruises," Mr Rutene said.

"We do have concerns for one of the people who is in their 80s."
