Two car crashes on State Highway 2 this morning caused delays for motorists.

A two-car crash in Te Puna had morning traffic backed up heading into Tauranga.

The incident, at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Munro Rd, was reported to police about 7.45am.

Two people were moderately injured in the crash.

A police spokeswoman said traffic had been backed up to Gill Lane but was flowing again.

Earlier, there was another crash on State Highway 2, this one near the intersection of Hot Springs Rd outside Katikati.

It was reported to police at 7.30am.

A passing motorist told the Bay of Plenty Times she could see a car in a ditch and another nearby on the corner of Hot Springs Rd.

The car in the ditch looked "pretty smashed up", she said.

She said there were two ambulances and a fire engine at the scene.

The police spokeswoman said both of the cars were off the road and one person had reported a minor injury.
