An oil spill left thousands of motorists caught in traffic that stretched more than 2km along Hewletts Rd yesterday.
Emergency services shut the lane to Tauranga-bound traffic near the first off-ramp for motorists travelling from Mount Maunganui after oil leaked from a truck for 500 metres on the harbour bridge - creating traffic woes that lasted more than five hours.
It was one of two major road incidents to disrupt traffic yesterday and happened about an hour before a man was trapped for more than an hour when the logging truck he was driving crashed into a ditch and spilled logs on to the road on State Highway 29 in the Kaimai Range.
The oil spill incident happened about midday and one lane of the Harbour Bridge remained closed for several hours, creating a backlog of traffic stretching back to the flyover near Bayfair.
Up to 10,000 motorists travel along Hewletts Rd every day.
