A 16-month-old boy was taken to Waikato Hospital after being struck by a car in a driveway.
The boy was being looked after by a family friend in Otumoetai when he ran out on to a shared driveway in Ferndown Close and was hit by a car about 11.25am, Sergeant Mike Owen said.
The toddler was taken to Tauranga Hospital with injuries including a partially severed tongue and grazing from the concrete driveway.
The decision was made later in the afternoon to transport the boy to Waikato Hospital.
Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman Diana Marriott said the boy was from Tauranga and he was in a stable condition.
