I am continually struck by what I don't know, but the privilege of this job is that affords me the opportunity to learn. I get to learn about parts of our community I hadn't been exposed to previously. Organisations such as Supported Individualised Lifestyle Choices (SILC) which provides support for those who require assistance with day to day living.
I recently visited a home in Papamoa where four disabled people live, with full-time care. I was introduced in a small way to the passion of the carers, including a local volunteer Eric who, for 24 years, has turned up every Thursday to take one of the residents for an outing. I was struck by the efforts that are made to enable these four residents to live a life to their maximum potential, encouraging as much engagement with people as possible, out in the community.
It's another example of the diversity of rich experiences that exists within our midst and should be celebrated. The next time you see a disabled person in public with a carer, please go and say hi or give a warm smile, it will make their day and go a long way to further strengthen our community.
