The latest benefit figures show 250 fewer people are on the benefit in the Western Bay of Plenty in this March quarter compared to the same time last year.
I am encouraged to see such tangible positive development in our region. As employment rates have risen, the Government has been empowering those on welfare to find work. We provide a hand-up rather than a hand-out to support those wanting work -- and it is working.
I commend the work being done by local Work and Income offices and especially of the efforts to find work by people who receive the benefit. Often these times are where people feel the most vulnerable and powerless, and it takes backbone to keep pressing on to find work.
Work is fundamental to the dignity of a person because moving from welfare to work means a better life, better opportunities and a brighter future. This Government has proudly supported people in these moments and continues to make progress by making available childcare assistance, training, workplace support, and access to health and disability support.
With the number of New Zealanders on benefits continuing to track downwards, I am pleased to say National's welfare reforms are working.
