Martin Huang moved to Tauranga with his wife because he thought it was a safe place to live.
But his dream of a peaceful life in the Bay was last night shattered when three men savagely beat him for a "pitiful" amount of money as he tried to deliver them a pizza meal.
Police have called the unprovoked attack "totally unnecessary violence".
Part-time pizza delivery worker Mr Huang, 27, was today finding speaking difficult as a punch to the face by one of his attackers smashed a front tooth out and left his jaw badly bruised.
Mr Huang, originally from China, was also nursing a deep cut above his eye, a sore leg and shoulder after being kicked repeatedly as he lay unconscious on the road.
His voice quavered as he spoke to the Bay of Plenty Times about the attack.
Mr Huang had made about 10 deliveries in the Greerton area when about 8.30pm Pizza Hut in Greerton took a phone order for one pizza, chips and a bottle of Pepsi.
Half an hour later, Mr Huang parked outside a house in Baycroft Ave, Merivale, with the order.
"I got out of the car and three young guys come over to me. I supposed they were the ones that ordered the pizza. One of them asked me how much it was.
"When I was looking at the docket I was punched in the face and fell on the road unconscious," Mr Huang said.
"I just remember the first punch. I must have been kicked after that because I have bruises everywhere."
Mr Huang managed to haul himself to his feet to find the food and a money pouch gone.
"I had blood pouring down my face and I was feeling dizzy."
Neighbours came to help Mr Huang but he drove himself to Greerton and alerted his manager about the beating before going home, collecting his wife Michelle, and driving to Tauranga Hospital.
Mr Huang stayed in Hospital overnight with minor surgery being done to a gash over his eye along with xrays, which found no broken bones in his jaw. He was discharged at 7am today.
The attack has Mr Huang doubting his future in the Bay.
He and his wife moved to Tauranga six months ago after Mr Huang completed a four-year masters degree in management at Victoria University.
"I thought Tauranga would be a really safe place. I heard of this happening in Auckland but I would never have thought it would happen to me here in Tauranga," Mr Huang said.
"I don't know what we will do now. It's not so safe any more."
Mr Huang had taken up the part-time delivery job four months ago while he looked to kickstart his management career.
The robbery has disgusted Tauranga's top detective.
"It's bloody ridiculous that anyone would think of robbing a pizza delivery man who only has small change on him," Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said.
"It's totally unnecessary violence."
Police spent a couple of hours last night interviewing about 18 people after a police dog and handler followed a track from Baycroft Ave through to a party at Hampton Ave.
Today police were to examine the scene where Mr Huang was attacked and interview neighbours in the area.
Police said the three offenders were Maori men in their late teens or early 20s. No arrests have been made and anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact police on 0800 SPEAKUP.
In 2001, Auckland pizza delivery man Michael Choy was bashed to death with a baseball bat and robbed of his money belt and pizzas that the teenagers had ordered to lure him to a Papakura address.
Twelve-year-old Bailey Junior Kurariki, who acted as a decoy and gave the signal for Alex Peihopa, 16, to leap out and fatally hit Mr Choy with the bat, was the youngest New Zealander to have been convicted of manslaughter.
Others involved were convicted on murder, manslaughter, theft and aggravated robbery charges.
