A 19-year-old Tauranga man is in critical condition after being hit by a ute in Paengaroa and police are looking for the driver.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lew Warner said Western Bay of Plenty Police were seeking information in relation to a pedestrian who was struck by a utility on Te Tumu Road about 9pm yesterday.

Mr Warner said the 19-year-old was on Te Tumu Rd, Paengaroa when he was struck by a gray/black utility heading east.

The utility is described as a flat deck with a drum on the tray.

Mr Warner said police have yet to locate and speak to this driver.

The 19-year-old is currently in Waikato Hospital with serious injuries. His condition is described as stable.

Police would also like to speak to any witnesses who saw this incident or anyone who has any information about this. Police would like the driver of the utility to contact them.

Te Puke St John station manager Simon Campbell said St John were called to the incident about 9.30pm.

St John took the 19-year-old to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition.

Fire northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said Maketu and Te Puke fire brigades also attended the incident to provide lighting for the police.
