Tauranga water cut off after mains break in central city

An emergency water shutdown is in place to part of central Tauranga.

Tauranga City Council said the shutdown was caused by a massive mains break at 6am which flooded both sides of the road.

The shutdown has affected Eleventh Ave and Fraser St from Devonport Roundabout to MacMillan St.

Tauranga City Council contractors are on site and are working hard to get the water back up by 10am.

A reporter at the scene said there was no spouting water or water on the street.

There have been two pipe breaks in Tauranga's water mains last month.

The first was on March 5 in one of the two trunk water mains that feed the Cambridge Rd reservoirs.

The reservoir level dropped to 45 per cent before the break was repaired the following day. There was another break on March 11 next to the first but a quicker response meant the impact was less.

The cause is thought to be pipe movement due to the dry conditions and failure of the pipe material, a portion of which has been sent for testing.
