Tauranga supermarket evacuated for fire

A large Tauranga supermarket was evacuated last night after a light fitting caught fire and began to fill the building with smoke.

Tauranga fire fighters were called to Countdown, Fraser Cove, at 10.44pm by an automatic alert system, acting senior officer Nigel Liddicoat said.

The supermarket was closed but staff were still there working and followed protocol to evacuate.

The light fitting was on fire when the crew arrived and the supermarket had begun to fill with smoke, he said.

Fire fighters isolated the power and extinguished the fire and referred it on to an electrician.
