Tauranga's New Year's Eve youth event has been cancelled due to low ticket sales.

The Silent Disco was planned to be held at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre on Sunday.

Tauranga City Council announced the cancellation this morning.

In a release, the council stated that everyone who bought a ticket had been notified and would be fully refunded.

"We apologise for the inconvenience."

The statement read: "The elements of this year's New Year's Eve community celebrations in Tauranga will focus on creating a safe and enjoyable family-friendly New Year's Eve across the city. Early evening, family-friendly, central city waterfront and Papamoa events including 9.30pm fireworks, as well as midnight fireworks are part of the planned community celebrations."
