A Tauranga man whose mother endured ''systemic failure'' by a rest home has donated $10,000 to Consumer NZ to assist families to take grievances to the Disputes Tribunal.
Robert Love was awarded $10,000 by the Disputes Tribunal after tribunal referee JP Smith found that Bupa Care Services had failed to provide Love's mother with a ''reasonable level of care'' in St Kilda Care Home in Cambridge.
Love told the Bay of Plenty Times last month that he took civil action through the Disputes Tribunal after being frustrated by what he felt was a lack of satisfactory responses from authorities, saying the tribunal's decision had been ground-breaking.
''Where I've gone, others can follow. It's possible to hold these providers of residential care to account in a timely and meaningful way.''
Consumer NZ announced today it had opened a new fund using the $10,000 to help consumers take complaints against rest homes to the Disputes Tribunal.
