"The last night the application was due to in she pleaded and said 'please can we do it', so we put in an audition tape and she put the tape together on her iPad at 1am," Hemana said.
Hemana said the highlights for them as a family was just spending time together.
"We were up in Russell, in the Bay of Islands where we'd never been before, so it was like a holiday. We had days off between filming where we could swim and hang out with locals, sample local beer and food and all that," she said.
She said another highlight was meeting the other families.
"It was competitive, but off-set everyone was super friendly."
Hemana said her and her husband owned Zumba Tauranga and believed they were a pretty fit family.
"But the other families were super outdoorsy, the other family that are in the finals - the mum and dad both represented New Zealand at the Olympics for track and field. But we all have something in common, we all care about our kids and are treasuring that time before they move away from school," Hemana said.
Team Browne is the other Tauranga family going into the final four clash this Sunday.
Their team is made up of dad; Phil, mum, Christine and daughter and son Georgia and Caleb will compete against Team Hemana.
The family was unable to be contacted before publication.
Team Browne and Team Hemana will compete against two other families – Team Maioha representing Northland, Team O'Connor representing the West Coast.
Hemana was giving no clues away about who takes the title out on Sunday however; "you're just gonna have to watch the show," she said.
