Tauranga City Council's website and online systems are down due to a network fault.
Acting chief executive Paul Davidson said the council's fibre network was accidentally damaged. A digger cut through the fibre cable on Cameron Rd, he said.
"Council contractors will work through the night to fix the problem. We expect our services will be restored by the morning.
"We want to ensure our community that we are doing everything we can to get our systems back up and running as soon as possible."
Online services including the website, email and online transactions were affected.
