Tauranga and Mount Maunganui have been named some of the most visited places where Kiwi travellers holidayed for their summer break.

Holiday rental website Bookabach's latest figures showed Coromandel, Lake Taupo, and Tauranga/Mount Maunganui took out the top three most booked.

The figures showed the average cost to stay at a bach in Tauranga or Mount Maunganui was $365 per night.

The average one-night stay in Western Bay of Plenty, including Waihi and Papamoa, costed $318.

Simone McDermid, communications manager at Bookabach, said the summer holiday season began in spectacular style over the break with getaways a few hours' drive from Auckland proving to be most popular booked on the site.

"Lake and beach escapes continue to be the most popular holidays booked by Kiwis this summer," McDermid said.

Data also showed holidaymakers were choosing to book their summer holiday breaks well in advance to get their bach of choice at their favourite holiday destination.

"Interestingly, over half of the holidays booked online this Summer on Bookabach were sometimes more than six months ahead of the planned holiday," McDermid said.

"Only 10 per cent of Kiwis booked their holidays online last minute, showing that to get the best bach, you shouldn't leave things till the last minute."
