Greerton Swim Club is celebrating after success at the New Zealand Short Course Championships in Wellington.
Nathan Capp smashed a 22-year-old record held by New Zealand's double Olympic gold medal winner Danyon Loader. Capp, 21, swam 14:38.74 to take 16 seconds off Loader's 1500m freestyle time.
A couple of team members are tracking in his footsteps, most notably 15-year-old Libby Bradley, who will show up at Greerton training this week with six medals in her pocket. She again showed her out-and-out speed winning gold in the 50m freestyle in 26.55 seconds. She earned silver medals in the 200m freestyle and 50m breaststroke, along with bronze medals in the 200m medley (2:23.38), 100m medley and 100m freestyle (58.48).
Nathan's younger sister Claudia, 16, won gold in the 200m butterfly in a time of 2:20.48. She also won bronze in the 50m freestyle in 26.92 seconds. Lochlainn O'Connor, 13, missed bronze by 0.09 seconds in the 50m butterfly and set some big personal bests touching in fifth in the 100m freestyle (58.42sec) and sixth in the 50m freestyle.
Other top 10 results came from Lucy Happe, 17, including a sixth placing in the 800m freestyle, Danielle Waiari, 16, sixth in the 50m butterfly, and Tessa Bradley, 14, who was fifth in the 200m butterfly and 10th in the 100m butterfly. Stacey Muir, 16, also swam a personal best 200m butterfly of 2:31.93 for eighth place.
