A man has died in Whangamata overnight and police are treating his death as suspicious with an investigation underway.
Eastern Waikato Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information they may have in relation to the death.
Eastern Waikato Area Investigations Manager, Detective Senior Sergeant Graham Pitkethley, said a homicide investigation had begun after emergency services were called to an Achilles Ave property about 1.30am.
"Arriving staff arrived to find a man, believed aged 76-years-old deceased, and detectives are currently speaking to an occupant of the house.
"The investigation is currently in its formative stages and it is too early to comment on the nature of how the victim died or any type of weapon used. A scene examination will commence this morning and Police are currently appealing for anyone in the vicinity of the property overnight or who may have any information to contact the Operation Tiger team at the Whangamata Police Station on 07 865 0300."
