Sun and hot temperatures for Bay

Temperatures over the weekend were one of the hottest recorded for Tauranga this side of winter ".

Yesterday was the hottest day of the November reaching 25.3C at 3pm while Saturday's high was 20.6C. Lows for the weekend were down to 10C on Saturday and 11C on Sunday.

The average maximum temperature for November is 20C, while the hottest recorded temperature for October was 23C.

Swells were also big reaching 2m yesterday and a maximum water temperature of 16.8C.

Beach-goer Zoe Harris hit Omanu Beach with Ruby, 7, and Shantae Lavatai, 12, yesterday afternoon. The trio had been watching a relative's soccer game and wanted to cool off.

Ms Harris said she always came to Omanu as the beach was family friendly and safe with the lifeguards patrolling the water.

The trio had been in the water but were more comfortable and warmer sunbathing on the sand.

MetService severe weather meteorologist Peter Little said the warmer weather would continue this week.

Mr Little said there was a front over the South Island at the moment but it was very weak and would only bring a small amount of cloud to the Western Bay of Plenty early in the week. Today's high was forecast to be about 23C.

The warm weather should hold through Wednesday but late on Thursday a new front could move up New Zealand bringing a few showers which could persist into Friday.

"People will notice the first half of the week being quite warm and then, on Thursday in particular, they will find it a couple of degrees cooler with a high of about 20C."
