Tauranga's Brookfield community is in shock after a young man was stabbed.
Police were called to Bellevue Rd about 12pm today after the victim was injured. A 26-year-old Te Kaha man was taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries following the attack.
A woman was helping police with their inquiries, a police spokeswoman said.
She said police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter and she understood the victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
Ross Bartley, who walks past the Brookfield address daily, said he was shocked to hear the news as it was "generally a nice neighbourhood" but "things like this can happen anywhere".
Another resident, who had lived on neighbouring Jefferson Place for more than 40 years, said it startled him to see so many police cars.
"I've never seen anything like this around here."
A nearby worker, who only wanted to be known as Denise, said she had heard a bit of commotion from a property, which was followed by sirens.
"I would not want to live around here."
Young mother Emmajae Robertson, clutching her 10-week-old baby, said she had lived in the area a long time and found the whole thing "really scary".
She said she had never known the area to be like this.
Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman Diana Marriott said the victim was in a serious but stable condition.
