One of the special things about being a Member of Parliament is the opportunities I get to celebrate the successes and achievements of people in our community. Over the past week I have attended a number of award ceremonies and functions to celebrate some amazing local people and the contributions they have made.
Last Wednesday I went along to the Tauranga Society of Artists Original Art Sale at the Elizabeth Street Community Centre. I was really impressed by the level of skill and quality of the artwork on display. The Society holds regular art sessions where people can get together and practice their craft, as well as putting on the 'Art in the Park' exhibitions at Coronation Park. It was also great to see three local World War II veterans who were presented with the medal of Knight of the French Legion of Honour in a ceremony at the Tauranga RSA. The Legion of Honour was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and is the highest decoration for distinguished services to the nation of France.
At the Western Bay of Plenty Police Awards last Friday there were a range of commendations and awards for service. As a former Crown Prosecutor I am aware of the hard work the Police do and some of the dangerous situations they can find themselves in as they go about helping to make our community safer.
It is important that we take the time out to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of those in our communities, all of whom give so much without the thought of recognition and reward.
