The man allegedly at the centre of a dramatic police chase which ended with a car on fire is in custody.
Bonn Glenn Taylor, 34, from Whangarei, made his first appearance in the Tauranga District Court on Tuesday afternoon after an alleged police pursuit which involved the closure of State Highway 2 at Wairoa Bridge on Monday. Taylor faced seven charges during his brief court appearance.
That is, two charges each of failing to stop for police and reckless driving, and one charge each of driving while his licence was suspended, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, and shoplifting.
The latter charge relates to an alleged petrol theft drive-off at a BP station in Morrinsville
the same day.
Police allege Taylor was driving a stolen car and twice failed to stop for police and operated the Holden vehicle recklessly on SH2 at Tauranga during a police pursuit.
