Save Department of Conservation (DoC) staff were in for a surprise last week when they received a report of a seal far from home.
The seal was found sunning himself on rocks in the Karangahake Gorge in between swims in the Ohinemuri River.
DoC staff were called to the seal, who
had managed to hide himself away from most people, and managed to take care of him.
DoC staff were unable to say where the seal was released or how he managed to visit so far from the sea.
