"I thought that was a simple, fun, exciting way to give back so we spoke to our mates when we got back and decided to put on our own scooter event."
Mr Martin said the Tauranga event would be held on December 6 and those taking part would ride from Phoenix Carpark in Mount Maunganui to Whitianga.
There would be five stops along the way where riders would take part in activities to engage with the community and have a bit of fun.
Riders could choose to go the whole trip alone, or ride as a team.
Each person was challenged to raise as much money as they could and the person who raised the most would win a prize, yet to be named.
Mr Martin said the aim was to end up with 50 to 100 teams and raise about $50,000.
"We kicked the first one off small. We're all busy people and there's no one person designated to put it all together.
"The idea is to do the first one, have some fun, then build on it."
He said the group of friends organising the event had 20 children between them and the Child Cancer Foundation was a worthy cause to donate to.
A traffic management team had been hired to manage roading issues.
Mr Martin said the event was not a race.
"It's just about raising the money."
Anyone who wants to take part can register on the event website, www.scooter4kids.co.nz.
