Ryall confirms retirement

UDPATED 9.35am: Health Minister Tony Ryall impending retirement has been confirmed.

Mr Ryall is announcing his departure from politics now.

Private media secretary Jackie Maher confirmed to the Bay of Plenty Times that Mr Ryall would be stepping down from his minster's role at the next election. He was announcing the news at 9.30am.

EARLIER: Health Minister Tony Ryall is due to address rumours he is resigning at 9.30am today.

When approached about the speculation, private media secretary Jackie Maher told the Bay of Plenty Times she could not confirm or deny the rumour but the minister would be making an announcement at 9.30am.

3 News political reporter Tova O'Brien tweeted this morning: "Health Minister Tony Ryall expected to announce his retirement at 9.30".

"3 News understands Tony Ryall told his electorate about retirement plans last night - feels he's achieved a lot, time to move on."

Mr Ryall refused to comment on the revelations when contacted this morning.
