A ruptured gas main has caused a section of a main Mount Maunganui road to be closed.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Campbell Rd at 4.15pm.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said a contractor had hit a gas main.

As a safety precaution, a section of Maunganui Rd near Blake Park and Clyde St was closed.

Fire crews had made the area safe and were waiting for gas experts to secure the situation.
