Rugby: Cane adamant he's staying right here

BAY PROUD: All Blacks and Chiefs flanker Sam Cane has re-signed for another two years with New Zealand Rugby.

Bay of Plenty openside flanker Sam Cane says playing for the All Blacks is way more important than lining his pockets.

He has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby and the Chiefs for two more years.

While other relatively young players have been lured overseas with lucrative contracts, Cane, 23, says he is not interested in playing anywhere else.

"At this stage of my career there is the potential over the next couple of years to really claim that All Blacks number 7 jersey," Cane said.

"I know there are a lot of guys who will have their eye on that too but you can't do that if you are playing elsewhere.

"There have been a lot of players who have played for the All Blacks throughout history but there are a select few who are remembered as great All Blacks. That is something that I am pretty keen to aspire to and that means putting a lot of tests together and playing bloody well."

Cane said it was a simple decision to stay with the Chiefs.

"It is an enjoyable environment to be a part of with a great bunch of men. The coaches are world class and the future is exciting for Chiefs rugby and that is something I want to play a leading role in.

"I am really enjoying my rugby and love playing for both the Chiefs and the All Blacks. I still have a lot of things I want to achieve in New Zealand rugby. I am still relatively young and still have a lot to learn about the game and plenty of room to grow as a player."

Reporoa-raised Cane was one of the stand-out players for the Chiefs this season and that effort was recognised when he picked up three major trophies at the recent 2015 Chiefs Awards.

In previous seasons he had to share the No 7 jersey with fellow Steamers flanker Tanerau Latimer but is thriving playing the full 80 minutes.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie was thrilled Cane had committed for another couple of years.

"He's an outstanding player but more importantly a quality young man, held in high regard by all.

"His work ethic, leadership and community mindedness continues to have a positive influence on our club."
