Dismay that the Memorial Park playground was losing its popular rocket slide has met with council assurances that it will be replaced with something better.
The Facebook announcement sparked a flurry of concern, with nearly 3000 hits from parents, or people with happy memories of the slide.
One of those was former councillor Murray Guy, who was stunned that the council was going to spend tens of thousands on a new slide when, in his opinion, the old one only needed a tidy up.
After examining the state of the slide yesterday and finding no visible deterioration, he reckoned it could be restored for as little as $1500, and without hitting ratepayers.
"It's part of the heritage of the park," he said.
