Calling all astronauts, a new rocket slide is landing in Memorial Park.
The original rocket slide was built in the 1960s. It was replaced in 1985 and was due for renewal this year and was closed last October after it failed a safety inspection.
The new Rocket Slide is being built in a more prominent location nearer to the Memorial Park fountain.
It has been designed with input from Council parks staff and Project Tauranga partner Placemakers Mount Maunganui, which is providing construction materials and labour.
Tauranga City Council Mayor Stuart Crosby said he had no doubt the new Rocket Slide would be as popular as the two previous incarnations.
"Memorial Park has had a rocket slide since the 1960s, forming a big part of the childhood memories of many people who have grown up here," Mr Crosby said.
"The new Rocket Slide will be something really special for our city that is sure to become a firm favourite with both children and parents alike."
Branch Operator Matt Orr said he was delighted to be involved in the project.
"The original Memorial Park rocket slide is fondly remembered by many of our staff, so we wanted to help create something that would continue that legacy," Mr Orr said.
There would be a free family fun day on Saturday, December 12, taking place from 11am to 2pm.
The event would feature roving performers, storytelling and a free barbeque provided by Project Tauranga partner Placemakers. Kids dressed in space theme will be in to win great spot prizes.
