Singer Ria Hall performed for Tauranga Hospital staff as part of Matariki celebrations today.
A few patients and family of staff also attended the 40-minute performance in the hospital's conference centre.
Tauranga-born Ria has recently been live backing vocalist for Hollie Smith and Trinity Roots and in 2012 her self-titled album was named album of the year at the New Zealand Music Awards.
In 2011 Ria sang the Rugby World Cup anthem at the opening ceremony.
When not singing Ria performs Kapa Haka and is a presenter on Māori Television.
Matariki is a celebration of culture, language, spirituality and history. It is a time for giving and sharing, as well as reflecting on and connecting with the world around us.
The Bay of Plenty District Health Board's regional Māori health services has this year championed Matariki by leading out a programme of activities that has included opening karakia, a video launch and presentation by Pouroto Ngaropo, a Matariki themed amazing race, Matariki displays in Kaupapa 2A and Children's Wards at Tauranga Hospital and a fabulous kapa haka performance by Te Kura Kaupapa o Otepou.
"Matariki is a time to remember the past and to plan for the New Year," says Kaupapa CNM Anamaria Watene. "It's a time for whānau, to remember those who came before us and the legacy they have left behind.
"It's also about promoting and creating an atmosphere of giving, sharing and caring, not only within our team but within the wider organisation; of demonstrating the CARE (Compassion, Attitude, Responsiveness, Excellence) values - and in reflection helping others, giving to those less fortunate than ourselves."
