A man has been arrested in relation to an alleged attempted robbery at a souvenir store in Mount Maunganui this week.

Police were called to the shop on Maunganui Rd about 2.30pm on Tuesday, following reports that a man had allegedly presented a knife at a female storekeeper and demanded money from her but left the shop empty-handed.

A heavy police presence was present after the incident with the police appealing for information from members of the public and other store workers.

Nobody was hurt in the incident but the storekeeper was left shaken and received assistance from Victim Support.

Police said a 19-year-old forestry worker had since been arrested and charged with assault with intent to rob. He will appear in the Tauranga District Court on Friday.

Detective Sergeant Alan Kingsbury thanked members of the public for providing "quality information" and said this was a significant factor in an arrest being made.
