Suspected mouse droppings on a pie and a cockroach in a lolly jar are among food hygiene complaints putting people off their food at Western Bay cafes and restaurants.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council received eight complaints so far this year in relation to poor food hygiene and practice. Last year it received 10.

At Tauranga City Council, there have been 27 complaints laid in the past 12 months. The year before it received 24 complaints.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council compliance and monitoring manager Alison Curtis said all complaints were investigated by an environmental health officer. The complaints ranged from rubbish at the rear of the premises, to flies spotted in the premises, to the toilets needing cleaning.

Four of the complaints were considered to be of a serious nature.

These included a substance suspected to be mouse droppings on the bottom of a pie, a dead cockroach inside a lolly jar, and suspected food poisoning from a sushi outlet and a fish and chip shop.

"The pie was provided to council staff, it was inconclusive that the black pieces on the pie were mouse droppings," Ms Curtis said.

"A site inspection showed no rodent problem on the premises."

A site inspection after the suspected cockroach incident showed no cockroaches on the premises or in any display jars and inspections of the sushi and fish and chip outlets did not reveal any issues with food handling or preparation.

"The persons who were sick did not visit a doctor so there was no indication of what may have caused their illness."

Ms Curtis said because none of the complaints could be substantiated, and did not lead to any formal warnings or legal action, the council would not name any of the cafes or restaurants involved.

Tauranga City Council environmental health and licensing team leader Darrienne Daubney said the majority of complaints involved cafes and restaurants but none resulted in enforcement action.

"The complaints varied, but included things like dogs being in outdoor dining areas, dirty utensils and accumulated rubbish at the back of food premises," she said.

"We can't always substantiate complaints as customers don't always keep the evidence [for example, hair in food, or mould on a food item].

"We encourage anyone who has any concerns about a food item to keep the food to help us with our investigations."

Some complaints about Western Bay cafes, restaurants and food outlets

* Abdominal pain and diarrhoea after eating fish and chips
* Fly problem
* Venue insanitary and poorly designed
* Staff not wearing hats or gloves
* Overcrowded
* Rubbish at back of shop
* Cat problem
* Glad wrap on the outside of sushi
