Local volunteers are turning a dream into reality by building an extension to the Miniature Railway in Memorial Park.
The trains run every Sunday and attract between 600 and 800 people.
Tauranga Model Marine and Engineering Club secretary Owen Bennett said the club decided five years ago to build an extension and work started two years later.
There were now two ground level tracks, which made up the original 600m track, with the extension expected to make it more than 1km long, he said.
Mr Bennett said there was "probably over a quarter of a million dollars involved in this", with funding coming directly from the club and TECT. Volunteer club members had built the extension.
