"The Big Latch On is a perfect opportunity to gather as a group in a safe, welcoming and stunning environment to celebrate its 10th anniversary together here at Hungahungatoroa Marae.
"Our aim is to raise awareness and promote "breast is best" wherever and whenever. Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and we should embrace it as the natural essence of great beginnings."
The event will be held in the marae's wharenui (meeting house) where there will also be a wahakura (sleeping basket) display. It is the sixth year Te Kupenga Hauora o Tauranga Moana has been involved and last year's Bayfair event attracted 17 mums and babies.
Te Kupenga Hauora Manager Theresa Wharekura said organisers were hoping to see up to 40 mothers and babies in attendance.
"Our aim is to get as many mama and pepi (babies) along as possible so come and join us," said Mrs Wharekura. "There are so many health benefits to breastfeeding. From when baby is born it acts as a first type of immunisation and then, as they get older, it's simply the best food available. Breast milk is a living thing and you can't replicate that in a can."
Last year, 130 breastfeeding events were held throughout New Zealand and the initiative is now run in 28 countries around the world involving more than 14,500 babies.
