Power out in Welcome Bay; school closes

Update: Classes have finished early at Welcome Bay School today following a power outage.

The school's principal, Nik House, was unsure what had caused the outage but said it had affected approximately 700 houses.

"[Trustpower] told us it would be [back] between 3 and 4 o'clock," Mr House said.

"They've managed to put some of the residents power back on but the problem exists between the school and one of the main points."

Power was out for 691 properties in Welcome Bay.

Mr House said 90 per cent of children had been collected.

Earlier: Power is out in Welcome Bay, affecting 765 properties.

Powerco reported the outage at 10.43am.

A site investigation was underway to discover the cause of the power outage.

Powerco expected the power to be back on by 3pm today.
