Mount Maunganui's reputation as the hive of trouble during New Year celebrations could well be outdated after a mostly uneventful evening for emergency services.
A second set of fireworks organised by Tauranga City Council rung in the New Year for the region with large ships in the port sounding their horns in celebration and cheers heard throughout the city. It followed a family-friendly display held at Tauranga waterfront at 9.30pm.
Despite the New Year festivity and trouble often associated with it, emergency services have been plesantly surprised at a mostly non-eventful night.
St John ambulance district operations manager Jeremy Gooders said New Year's Eve was traditionally their busiest night of the year, but so far the evening had been exceptionally quiet.
'We are not through it yet but by this time we normally see more people calling us for assistance with injuries associated with falls and fights and things like that. We've had very little work load.''
