Speeding drivers in the Western Bay are being given a visual reminder of just how fast they are travelling.
Two speed display trailers will be on the road over the next few months under an initiative by the Accident Compensation Corporation in conjunction with Tauranga City Council, Road Safety and police.
The trailers have a huge speed display screen and are able to measure an oncoming car's speed and then show it for the driver to see.
The trailers are part of ACC's "Down with speed" project.
Tauranga-based ACC injury prevention consultant Carole Fleming said the trailers would be placed in speeding hotspots around the Tauranga and the Western Bay. And already the trailers are having the desired effect.
"As soon as they see it their brakes are slammed on," Ms Fleming said.
"It's all about getting people to slow down."
Several drivers have already pulled over to ask people setting up the unit during the past two weeks how they worked.
Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, of the Greerton-based Strategic Traffic Unit, said the trailers were an excellent tool for alerting drivers to their speed.
Drivers who exceed the legal speed limit by 50kmh face having their vehicle impounded, plus a fine and maybe their driver's licence being suspended for 28 days.
Drivers who accrue 100 demerit points in two years lose their licence for three months.
The speed trailers will be in places identified by police as trouble speeding spots.
