Two cars parked in central Tauranga were deliberately torched today.
Tauranga firefighters were first called to a white Triumph on fire in Elizabeth St at 6.26am. The fire was quickly extinguished but on their return to the Cameron Rd Station, they were called to a second flaming car in First Ave at 6.51am.
A Subaru station wagon was gutted and its contents damaged. The heat from the Subaru was so intense a Honda car parked nearby also ignited.
Detective Sergeant Lew Warner, of Tauranga Criminal Investigation Branch, said it was clear the cars had been deliberately set alight.
Police were speaking to people in the area this morning.
Tauranga Police are also calling for help with an investigation into a fire at a Mount Maunganui bakery early last Friday. The fire is being treated as arson.
The fire at Well Bred Bakery in Mount downtown is believed to have started about 2.30am at the shop rear.
