Why the bad manners and impatience?
This is the question to all motorists who have caused problems at the pedestrian crossing outside Bethlehem School.
Our page one story yesterday revealed how speeding drivers are abusing parents and teachers after being told to slow down as they approach the school's new crossing.
The crossing was installed late last year after concerns about child safety on busy Bethlehem Rd - but thoughtless speeding drivers are making life a misery for the school community.
Andrea Hoyle, the parent behind the crossing, had to endure a rant from one grandmother she asked to slow down.
Other drivers have driven around the school students patrolling the crossing with their "lollipop" signs. Two children were almost hit by a motorist overtaking.
The result is the children no longer patrol the crossing. Instead Ms Hoyle, wearing a high-visibility vest, steps on to the road and stops the traffic so students can cross. Police have also been called in to assess the situation and they fear a child will be killed or hurt.
This situation is absurd.
Most drivers are polite but there are always some who don't care about others.
What has happened to these people's manners? Why would anyone speed or put children's lives at risk at a pedestrian crossing. And why would anyone want to lash out at people doing something that is essentially an institution in just about every community?
Police were at the crossing this week filming drivers as they get to grips with the situation.
The city council is looking at measures such as speed bumps to calm everything down.
This is a good idea.
Another is an intensive campaign at this site, targeting speed and nasty drivers.
After a few tickets, they might get the message.
